Pool Deck Pavers, Cool Deck & Coping in Scottsdale, AZ
Solterra builds and resurfaces pool decks around existing pools across Scottsdale, from resort-style estate decks in North Scottsdale and Troon North to aging 1980s surrounds in McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch. We do not build pools; we install travertine, pavers, cool-deck coatings and coping around the pool you already have, in light tones that stay cooler underfoot through Zone 9b sun.
Scottsdale, AZ is pool country. From the resort-grade backyards of North Scottsdale and Troon North to the established lots of McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch, most homes here already have a pool, and the deck around it is what decides whether the space gets used. In Zone 9b full sun a pool deck lives under relentless heat, so the surface temperature, the slip resistance when it is splashed, and how fast it clears a monsoon downpour all matter more than almost anything else in the yard. That is the work we focus on. To be clear up front, Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools; we build and resurface the hardscape around the pool you already have.
The single biggest complaint about a Scottsdale pool deck is a surface too hot to cross barefoot by mid-morning. Dark broom-finish concrete climbs well past comfortable by July. We attack that two ways. First, material and color: light-toned travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings reflect more sun and hold less heat than dark surfaces, and the lighter desert palette also happens to be what North Scottsdale design-review boards prefer. Second, texture: a matte, lightly textured finish reads cooler and grips better when wet than a smooth, sealed one, so the deck stays walkable through the hottest part of a Scottsdale afternoon.
Coping is the capped edge where the deck meets the pool, and it does real work: it gives a finished, comfortable lip to sit on and grab, and it sheds splash-out water away from the shell. We set travertine, precast or paver coping to a clean line and a slight pitch. Drainage is the detail Scottsdale lots punish you for missing. On the foothill grades of North Scottsdale and Scottsdale Mountain, monsoon runoff moves fast, and caliche sheds water instead of absorbing it, so we grade the deck and add channel or deck drains where the site needs them to carry a storm away from both the pool and the house. Again, we work only on the deck, coping and surround, never the pool shell, plumbing or equipment.
Most of our Scottsdale pool-deck work is a resurface, not a rebuild, and that suits the city's older master-planned communities especially well. Many McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch pools were built from the 1970s through the 1990s, and they sit on tired, cracked concrete that is ready for a new life. If the slab is structurally sound, we lay pavers or travertine over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay without a full tear-out. Where the concrete is cracked, heaved or on poor base, we rebuild on compacted aggregate so the new surface stays flat. Because nearly every Scottsdale community runs architectural review, we choose materials and colors that pass boards like DC Ranch and Grayhawk, and we prepare the documentation you submit. We have done this since 2012 under ROC 359628.

Concrete & Pool Decks in Scottsdale: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a pool deck cost in Scottsdale?
It depends on the surface. A cool-deck coating over sound concrete typically runs about 4 to 9 dollars per square foot in Scottsdale, while pavers or travertine over or in place of concrete usually run about 15 to 30 dollars per square foot installed. A larger North Scottsdale estate deck sits at the higher end. We quote a firm number after seeing the deck.
What is the coolest pool deck surface for Scottsdale sun?
Light-toned, textured surfaces run coolest in Zone 9b full sun. Natural travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings all stay meaningfully cooler underfoot than dark broom-finish concrete. Color and texture matter more than the material name, and the lighter palette also reads well to North Scottsdale design-review boards. We point out the coolest options for your exposure during the estimate.
Do you build pools or just the deck around them?
We do the deck, coping and coatings around an existing pool. Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools, and we do not touch the shell, plumbing or equipment. We handle everything you walk on and the edge that caps the pool, and we coordinate cleanly with your pool contractor when one is involved.
Can you resurface my Scottsdale pool deck without tearing out the concrete?
Usually, yes. If the existing slab is structurally sound, which is common on McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch pools, we can lay pavers or travertine over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, which is faster and less costly than a tear-out. If the concrete is badly cracked or heaved on caliche, we rebuild on a proper base. We tell you which path your deck needs after walking it.
Will a new pool deck hold up to Scottsdale heat and monsoon?
Yes, when it is built for the climate. Travertine and paver decks set on a compacted base commonly last 25 years or more and flex with caliche instead of cracking, while a quality cool-deck coating holds several years before a refresh. We grade the deck to clear monsoon runoff fast, so water never ponds against the pool edge or the house.
