The first decision is fuel, and on Carefree's lots it is a real one. Natural gas pits light instantly and throw steady heat, but many lots out here are not on a gas main, so we plumb a hidden propane tank to feed the pit or fireplace with the same instant-on convenience. Gas also sidesteps the no-burn worry: Maricopa County restricts wood fires on high-pollution winter days. Wood-burning pits give a bigger flame and real crackle for larger gatherings, and the open, acre-plus desert lots common in Carefree are one of the few places they still make good sense with proper clearance.
