Carefree sits at the high, rocky edge of the north Valley, where custom homes are tucked low among granite boulder outcrops instead of leveling them. Lots here run large, often an acre or more, from The Boulders and Sentinel Rock to the homes climbing into the Carefree Foothills below Black Mountain. The ground is decomposed granite and caliche studded with boulders most owners want left exactly where they are. Pavers are the surface that works with that kind of lot, because they can be shaped around rock and grade rather than fighting them.

A poured concrete patio or driveway struggles on Carefree ground. Caliche sheds water instead of soaking it up, the natural washes that cross these lots move hard during a monsoon, and a rigid slab cracks when the decomposed granite shifts beneath it.
